OCEMS EMT Accreditation

Course Description

All EMTs seeking employment as an EMT in Orange County must successfully complete an OCEMS approved EMT Expanded Scope Accreditation course within 30 days of employment.  However, many employers are requiring this to even turn in an application. Our course has been approved by the county to provide the training to practice within your expanded scope in accordance with OC EMS policy #315.00, once employed by a provider agency.

Our course is 4 hours in length and includes a presentation and skills training followed up by a written quiz and skills validation. You must receive a score of greater than 80% on the written quiz and pass all skills stations to receive a course completion certificate.

Course Registration and Fees

Once successfully registered for the course, you will receive access to the Accreditation Manual, including the key policies and skills sheets, to study prior to coming to class. This will allow the day to flow quicker and you will have a chance to gain familiarity with the skills prior to the class meeting.

OCEMS EMT Accreditation Detailed Course Description

The OCEMS EMT Accreditation Course has two main components, a cognitive component and a psychomotor component. These are more commonly termed didactic or lecture, and skills.

Objectives

At the successful completion of the Accreditation course, participants will have greater working knowledge and understanding of:

  • OCEMS Expanded Scope of Practice
  • Orange County EMS System
  • Orange County EMS Policies Regarding Patient Care and Transport

And will have been evaluated and competency verified in the following skills:

  • Endotracheal Tube and Tracheostomy Tube Suctioning
  • Glucometer Use
  • MDI Assistance
  • Auto-Injector
  • 12-Lead EKG Placement
  • IV Set-Up and Monitoring
Pre-requisites

Although there is no prerequisite to take the course, without a current EMT card and BLS (CPR) card, you will not be able to apply to practice as an EMT in Orange County. It is the student's responsibility to verify their status and know their individual requirements.

Successful Completion

Prior preparation is recommended for completion of this course. The materials consist of the most recent OCEMS Accreditation Manual and various OCEMS Policies Supplemental material is available on this website.

Successful completion of this course is dependent upon the learner demonstrating satisfactory skills as listed in the objectives above.

A score of at least 80% must be achieved on the final written examination.
